March and April mark the mating period for Greater Sage Grouse. The males’ sunrise courting display is very unique and takes place on an open piece of ground called a lek. the males and females return to the lek every year for mating. The males strut and puff up their chests by inflating air sacs. They make sounds like a cross between popping bubble gum and running water. It’s sort of spectacular and humorous all rolled into one.

The Wyoming Game and Fish have developed a Sage Grouse Viewing Guide to direct the public to the most accessible sage grouse leks and educate on the proper grouse viewing “etiquette.” Essentially, stay in your vehicle and don’t take your dog with you. Every Wyomingite should see this at least once in his/her life.
